The Inter-Secondary School Impromptu Speaking competition continued on Tuesday with St John’s College winning against the Institute of Business Education (IBE).

According to a press release from the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), St John’s scored 592 points and the IBE 516 points. Central High School then overcame Christ Church Secondary School with 557 points to the latter’s 506 points.

Each team pulled three topics to speak on. St John’s topics were ‘If you were a teacher how would your class be different?’ ‘Women should have careers outside the home’ and ‘How can we stop domestic violence?’ The IBE chose ‘Reading is the best form of relaxation’, ‘Results are more important than character in our national leaders’ and ‘The most fundamental wrong is selfishness’.

Christ Church chose, ‘What I want for my country within the next ten years’, ‘Should smoking be banned in public places?’ and ‘What I would do to promote tourism in Guyana’. Central’s topics were: ‘Child abuse and the consequences’, ‘Sex education belongs in the school or the home’ and ‘Free education should be provided at the University of Guyana’.

The judges were Sheik Sadiq, Maureen Williams and Abiola Inniss.

The competition continued yesterday with Marian Academy scheduled to come up against Cummings Lodge Secondary and President’s College competing against School of the Nations, according to the press release.

The competition is sponsored by the Regent Street branch of GBTI and is being held at the GBTI Recreational Centre.
