The St George’s Cathedral is hosting a Concert of Classical and Semi-Classical Music in honour of Guyana’s 43rd Independence anniversary and to raise funds to rehabilitate the building.

In a press release the Cathedral’s Special Events Committee said the concert will highlight the “exceptional talents of some of the youths of the Diocese” including Curtis Henry on saxophone, Gordon Marshall on trumpet, Tevera Franklin on violin, Candace Barnes and Thalia Baeza-Milan on piano, the Steel Band Ensemble and many others. Ron Robinson is hosting the programme. He is also expected to perform on the harmonica.

The Cathedral said the artists are trained musicians who have excelled in recent England-based Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations and some of the pan players won top prizes at the most recent Music Festival. “It is hoped that their enthusiasm will be rewarded by the support of members of the public,” the release said.

The Committee said it plans to effect major repairs to the ceiling, nave and transepts of the Cathedral with the funds raised. Admission for adults is $500 and $200 for children.
