Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton on Monday ordered that a Canje Creek man who admitted having over one kilogramme of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking pay a fine of over $1 million as well as serve four years imprisonment when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Robert Samuels had pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

He admitted that on May 21, he had 1.2 kilogrammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking at Canje Creek, East Bank Berbice.
Police Prosecutor Robert Clemment stated that on that day ranks from the joint services were on a search in the Canje Creek area when they observed Samuels acting suspiciously at a camp. When they attempted to apprehend him he ran away. They eventually arrested him and brought him back to the camp where a search was conducted and the quantity of cannabis was discovered.

Samuels admitted to being the owner of the cannabis. He was then taken to the police station where he was later charged.
The magistrate subsequently ordered that he pay a fine of $1,080,000 and also serve four years imprisonment.
