– suspect held

In a literal reminder of the phrase ‘smoking kills’, a Port Kaituma resident was fatally stabbed by another man on Friday afternoon during a row over a cigarette.

Dead is Kenneth Kennedy. The suspect, who was apprehended by members of the community, is in police custody.

Reports are sketchy but this newspaper was told that the incident occurred at the suspect’s home at Four Miles between 1pm and 2.30 pm.

The deceased, his uncle and the suspect were believed to have been drinking.

Stabroek News was told that the suspect and Kennedy’s uncle had an argument over a cigarette during which the suspect stabbed Kennedy’s uncle. Kenneth reportedly intervened and he was stabbed to his neck and later succumbed.

Reports are that the suspect attempted to escape after the incident but was later caught by members of the community who handed him over to the police.

A post-mortem is expected to be conducted shortly. Meanwhile, the uncle who was injured is at home recuperating from his injuries.

This newspaper was told that Kennedy was about 25 years old and was a farmer. He is survived by his wife and four children.
