Government is appalled at the discrepancy in airfare structures which persons face for travel to the United States (US) and nearby Caribbean territories compared to those charged in other countries, and has vowed to seek explanations from any airline with such an unfair practice.

Caribbean Airlines is the first airline to be brought under the spotlight and will me made to explain how this is possible, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon disclosed yesterday. He said government was concerned that airfares from nearby Trinidad and Tobago (TT) to New York  do not compare favourably  with the Georgetown to New York route by the same carrier.

Luncheon said the airline would be asked to explain the reasons for this.

He noted that Prime Minister Samuel Hinds has since summoned an executive of Caribbean Airlines for an engagement to  clarify this matter.

He further explained that wherever there is evidence of unfair treatment to Guyana in the airfare structures, the prime minister would seek explanations.
