An Israeli investment company has been clearing 200 acres of land for the cultivation of pawpaws and pineapples at Dora, Soesdyke.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Shigam Inc is expected to start cultivation next month. Director of the company Liran Peretz told GINA that Guyana is the alternative due to the availability of water year round.
Minster of Agriculture Robert Persaud, who visited the farm on Saturday said the investment is a “two-wind strategy; promoting and accelerating diversity and secondly, a company with a market to allow Guyana to enter markets we were not able to enter before.”

According to GINA the company which has more than 30 years of experience in supplying markets and supporting other farmers worldwide, is currently linking with other Guyanese farmers to export fruits and vegetables, based on demand and market requirements. It said too satellite farms (agricultural food production areas which operate just within the periphery of an urban group) will sell their produce to Shigam Inc which will in turn export them to their markets in Europe and the United States.
