Woman remanded over jewellery robberies

A woman who allegedly robbed two other women on separate days was yesterday remanded to prison when she appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Marquitta Hillman, 22, pleaded not guilty to the charges of larceny from the person and robbery under arms when they were read to her by the Acting Chief Magistrate.

It is alleged that on June 4 at Georgetown, Hillman of Lamaha Park Squatting Area stole from the person of Michelle Chung one gold band valued $65,000, property of the said Michelle Chung. It is also alleged that on June 11 at Georgetown, the said Hillman together with another, robbed Maressa Umrao of one gold band valued $90,000, property of the said Maressa Umrao.

Umrao explained to the court that on the day in question she was walking along Hink Street when the defendant and a male accomplice accosted her from behind. She further stated that it was Hillman who snatched her band and ran. According to the virtual complainant (VC), public-spirited persons decided to give chase but soon stopped as the defendant reached to her waist for “something.” Chung, the other virtual complainant,  was not present in court.

The defendant denied the allegations against her and told the court that she had never before seen the VC.  Hillman added that while at the East La Penitence Police Station, Umrao told the police that it was not the accused who had robbed her but a man  instead.

“My worship, when de police ask she if is I rob she, she said no, is a male person that went with me, but me ain’t know wah she talking bout my Worship,” the defendant said.
Hillman was later remanded to prison until today.
