President Bharrat Jagdeo on Wednesday met a team including representatives from ACDA and the Bagotville Cultural Circle to finalise support for their respective celebrations for Emancipation Day.

In a press release the Government Information Agency (GINA) said Chairman of the Bagotville Cultural Circle Ashton Crawford and African Cultural Development Association (ACDA) Manager, Sustainability Development Fund S Egerton Cooke were among those at the meeting.

After the meeting Cooke told GINA that ACDA’s programme for August 1 would have been finalised at its planning committee meeting later in the day and would be publicised. The activities will be hosted at the National Park.

Meanwhile, Crawford said Bagotville’s festivities will start on July 26 and run until August 1. They will include a libation ceremony, drumming, cultural events, talks on emancipation, games and sport. The celebrations are slated for the Bagotville Community Centre, West Bank Demerara.

This year’s Emancipation Day celebrations mark the 175th anniversary of abolition of slavery.
