A 37-year-old man who said that he was framed was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court accused of uttering a forged document and conspiracy to commit a felony.

It is alleged that on July 24 at the Guyana Post Office Corporation, with intent to defraud, Clement Dover of 47 Seaforth Street, Campbell-ville uttered to Carol Fowler, a clerk at GPO, one identification card number 1485665 purporting to show that it was issued by the Guyana Elec-tions Commission (GECOM), knowing same to be false.

It is also alleged that between February 1-12, 2001 at the GPO, Dover conspired with a person or persons unknown to forge one ID card number 1485665, purporting to show that same was issued by GECOM, knowing same to be false.

The accused pleaded guilty with explanation to the July 24 charge and not guilty to the 2001 charge.
In tears the unrepresented Dover told the court that he had been framed by two men who through force caused him to approach the GPO with the ID card. According to the defendant, two men armed with guns had approached him from a car and demanded that he go the post office to conduct business on their behalf.

He maintained that he was innocent of the charges and had been forced to do what he did because of fear for his life.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith told the court that in a bid to commit the fraud, the accused used his photographs to insert into another person’s ID card in order that he may benefit from such an act. She then asked that bail be denied.

The father of three was later denied bail and remanded to prison until August 7. His matter was transferred to Court Two.
