Chinese national accused of attempted bribery at US embassy

A Chinese national who allegedly attempted to bribe an official at the US Embassy after being denied a US visa was yesterday remanded to prison when she appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on July 13 at the US Embassy, Yuetian Cao attempted to commit a corrupt transaction with an official at the said Embassy.

Cao pleaded not guilty to the charge of committing a misdemeanour when it was read to her by the Magistrate.

The woman who does not speak English had to be provided with an interpreter.

Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith told the court that on the day in question, the defendant had gone to the Embassy along with her three children to get a US visa; after being denied the visa however, the Prosecutor said that the accused attempted to bribe the official with $10,000 in a bid to obtain the travel document. A police report was subsequently made and an arrest followed.

The unrepresented defendant was later remanded to prison until August 11.
