Jagdeo to visit Iran – report

The Iranian News Agency (FNA) last evening reported that President Bharrat Jagdeo is to visit Iran shortly.

FNA reported the President as saying “Soon, we will get familiar with the capabilities and capacities of the Islamic Republic of Iran during a visit to the country.” Jagdeo made the disclosure in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. Jagdeo is in Quito for a UNASUR meeting.
The two sides also discussed the latest regional developments.

FNA said Mottaki arrived in Quito on Monday at the head of a delegation to attend Ecuador President Rafael Correa’s inauguration ceremony.

It said Jagdeo also expressed his country’s preparedness to expand relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Mottaki, for his part, pointed to the proximity in the policies of Iran and Latin America, and added, “Such convergence has led to an increase in the trade and economic ties between Iran and the regional (Latin American) states.”
Iran has come under severe international pressure recently over its discredited general election which has seen the worst unrest since the 1979 revolution.
