Nine months for ‘running through bag’

A 31-year-old man yesterday pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that Dwight Leina on August 12 in the Georgetown Magisterial District stole US$413 dollars property of Sharla Johnson. However in his explanation, Leina told the court that he saw the bag lying on the ground next to a stall and he decided to “run through” it and that is when he saw the money and took it.

Meanwhile the account given by Police Prosecutor Munilall Seetaram revealed that the Virtual Complainant (VC) Johnson was at the stall where she placed her hand bag down and the defendant noticing it, went into the bag and took the money and went away. The VC is a vendor. The matter was then reported and the defendant was subsequently picked up by a police on patrol where the money was found on Leina’s person. He was arrested.

After hearing the statements by the defendant and the prosecutor Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry  handed down a judgment of nine months imprisonment for Leina.
