Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday placed Odel Chase and Ade Doobay, who allegedly attacked a group of students as they were studying in the Botanical Gardens in April, on bail when they appeared before her on a felonious wounding charge.

The charge was read to the duo at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Doobay, a twenty-five-year-old tennis coach of “E” Half, Hadfield Street, Wortmanville and Chase, a 19-year-old fisherman of James Street, Albouystown, both pleaded not guilty the charge which stated that they unlawfully and maliciously wounded Samantha Hollingsworth on April 25, with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause her actual bodily harm.

Their lawyer, James Bond had applied for bail for them on the grounds that they were innocent of the charge and that the offence was a bailable one.

He stated that the two men were also previously charged for robbery under arms and discharging a loaded firearm. He noted that Doobay was granted bail in the sum of $350,000 when the bail application was made at the High Court. Chase was also granted bail.

He also stated the Hollingsworth had told the police that her group was attacked by two men on a silver motorcycle. He noted the Chase owned a blue bike.

The prosecution made no objections to the bail applications and it was subsequently granted to the duo in the sum of $75, 000 each and the case was transferred to Court Five for Friday.

Ade Doobay

In April, Doobay had pleaded not guilty to the charge of discharging a loaded firearm. He and Chase who was jointly charged for robbery under arms pleaded not guilty.

Doobay denied that he discharged a loaded firearm at Samantha Hollingsworth with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm or to maim, disfigure or disable her on April 25.

He along with Chase also denied that they on the same day robbed Hollingsworth of a laptop computer valued $300,000.

They had appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton who read those charges to them.

Reports are that Hollingsworth, 16, of Kitty, was one of a group of students who were accosted by two men on a motor scooter – CE 4573.   The men held up the teen, the police said, and demanded her laptop computer, but she struggled with them and was shot.

Acting on information, police went to a house in James Street, Albouystown and arrested the two men. The brazen midday attack traumatized the group of around 15 city students.
