Sixteen-year-old Alex Armogan has done the New Amsterdam Secondary School proud by achieving 11 grade one passes with 10 distinctions at this year’s Caribbean Secon-dary Education Certificate (CSEC).

He told Stabroek News that he was very happy to be the top student of his school and to be placed second in Region Six. He was not surprised with his achievement as he had always done well.

He pointed out that his success did not come easily and that he had placed a lot of emphasis on his studies to achieve his high grades.

Alex aspires to become an economist so he can “contribute to the development of my country.” He would be pursuing studies in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Exami-nation at his old school before moving on to a university overseas.

Alex had also written two subjects at CSEC while in fourth form – Information Technology and Electronic Document Preparation and Management and had gained distinctions in both. He has now secured passes in 13 subjects with 12 distinctions.

His father, David Armogan, chairman of the education committee in the region told this newspaper that his son had done well at the Secondary School Entrance Examination. He said the boy was awarded a place at Queen’s College but he opted to send him to the New Amsterdam Secondary instead.

Alex expressed thanks to God, first of all for His blessings and was also grateful to his parents “for their material and moral support.

He also credited his success to his teachers; “Sir Dhanraj, Sir Chabilall, Miss Babb and Miss Isaacs as well as all my other teachers for their guidance and encouragement and my grandparents whose prayers  I am sure helped me.”

He advised his fellow students “to be consistent with your studies and spend some time everyday on your school work and you would be successful. School can only do so much for you; you have to do the rest.”

Joshua Bhudial of JC Chandisingh Secondary School has topped Berbice with his 11 distinctions but the New Amsterdam Secondary has emerged the top school after gaining 79.1% passes in grades one to three.

The business department of the school has once again performed outstandingly, according to reports from the region with Sonya Yacoob gaining 11 grade ones with eight distinctions, putting her in the second spot.

Cynthia Barran has secured the third position with seven grade ones and five grade twos while Kimberly Sangster took the fourth spot with eight grade ones and three grade twos.

Another student, Andre Hidar who sat six subjects at the CSEC in fourth form has secured grade one passes in all.
