A 32-year-old man, who allegedly obtained $1.5M from a woman by purporting to be in a position to obtain two US student visas for her, was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

According to the prosecution, Hardial Mathura called ‘Danny’ of 275 Enterprise, East Coast Demerara, with intent to defraud,  obtained $1.5M from Priya Seeram by pretending that he was in a  position to get her two US student visas, knowing same to be false.

However, Mathura, a television technician, told the court “If ah plead guilty y’all gon wan lock me up and if ah plead not guilty and ain’t  get bail dah gon be another thing.  I dunno wah fuh do.”

The magistrate then entered a not guilty plea for Mathura for the charge of obtaining money by false pretence.
Mathura then stated that he and Seeram had decided to settle the matter by having him recompense her.

He said that he will make monthly payments to her until December when he would be able to fully repay her.
He was later remanded to prison and ordered to return to court on September 16 with some of the money to commence the payments.
