The Region Four Administration said it has completed 93% of its physical capital works and 90% of its current works in its 2009 work programme.

In a press release Regional Executive Officer Shafdar Alli said the programme included capital works in education, health, drainage and irrigation infrastructure, roads and bridges with expenditure totalling $150.6 million. He also said a few projects had been terminated and the process of awarding tenders had to be restarted.

The release said in the education sector the Practical Instruction Centre (PIC) at Buxton was rehabilitated and major repairs were also done at the Susannah’s Rust Primary School located up the Demerara River. The centre will soon be operational the release said, adding that the Ministry of Education had allocated an additional $8 million so that the works on the building could be completed. Works were also done on the Lusignan and St Andrew’s Primary on the East Coast and the Silver Hill Primary on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.

Alli said a heavy-duty concrete bridge is currently being built at Pigeon Island, but had been delayed because the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board had awarded it late. He said a greenheart bridge will also be built at Company Path, Buxton leading to the PIC and emergency works will be done to the Golden Grove school bridge.

Alli said works to the health centres at Cane Grove and Unity are complete and rehabilitation to the Dr CC Nicholson Hospital and doctors and medexes quarters are ongoing.

Repairs have also been done to Cummings Street, Buxton; North Vryheid’s Lust; Old Road, Ogle; and Pay Office Street, Enterprise. Alli also said a contract was awarded for the building of another section of Cummings Street and works are expected to start soon.

In addition to the road programme an additional $57 million was made available by the Ministry of Finance Road Maintenance Prog-ramme to undertake repairs to several roads in several districts. These works are currently in progress and are expected to be completed soon.

Greenheart revetments have been built at Cane Grove, Enmore and Busby Dam, Craig.

A canal has also been excavated at Supply and has been completed along with the rehabilitation of the Beterverwagting East Sideline.

All outstanding works are expected to be completed by October month end.
