GRA urges self-employed persons to pay taxes

The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) is urging self-employed persons to pay their taxes.

In a press release GRA Commissioner-General Khurshid Sattaur said self-employed persons can pay their taxes in four quarterly instalments per year: on April 1, July 1, October 1 and December 31 as they continue to benefit from taxes paid by employed taxpayers. Self-employed persons comprise doctors, lawyers and businessmen of all categories and as such these professionals have a greater ability to contribute to tax payments than employees.

The GRA said the implementation of the Total Revenue Integrated Processing System has brought several tax dodgers into the tax net allowing it to collect millions of dollars in lost revenue. It has also allowed it to detect other methods used by taxpayers to undermine revenue collection.

The GRA said it is pleased that the public has responded to its request to supply information on tax dodgers. It said all information is treated with the strictest confidentiality and as such it urges persons to become more active in this regard as it has great long-term benefits for the country. Persons with such information can contact the GRA’s Intelligence Hotline on telephone number 225-6687.
