Raw gold robbery duo remanded

Two men who allegedly robbed a man of a quantity of raw gold and also wounded him were yesterday remanded to prison when they appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Twenty-six-year-old Serichand Persaud of Lot 64, Patentia Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara and Augustine Bell, 17, of Caneville Housing Scheme, who were jointly charged with simple larceny both pleaded not guilty.

Meanwhile, Persaud was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of unlawful wounding.

Two denied that on September 14, they robbed Francis Da Silva of two ounces, seven pennyweights of raw gold valued $757,300.

It is alleged that on the same day, Persaud unlawfully and maliciously wounded Da Silva so as to cause him grievous bodily harm.

The prosecution stated that the blows that Da Silva had received from Persaud caused him to sustain severe injuries resulting in him being admitted to hospital, where he is still a patient.

The magistrate subsequently ordered that the duo be remanded to prison and that the cases be transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for September 30.
