Two remanded over selling ganja to cops in separate transactions

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on Thursday ordered that two men, who allegedly sold a quantity of cannabis to two policemen in separate incidents, be remanded to prison when they appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Twenty-five-year-old Wesley Alexander of Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara and Wilmurt Stewart, 22, of Kitty both pleaded not guilty to separate charges of trafficking in narcotics when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to them.

Alexander denied that on September 14, at Lot 77 Da Silva Street, Newtown he trafficked in 2.5 grammes of cannabis by selling same to Constable Forde.  Stewart denied that on the same day at Robb Street, Stabroek, he trafficked in 2 grammes of cannabis by selling same to Constable David.

Alexander stated that he did not sell the cannabis to Constable Forde but the policeman had given him money for the cannabis and when he told him that he didn’t sell that, the policeman asked him who he could get some from. “He [Forde] can’t catch de big boss so he lock me up,” added Alexander.

He also told the court that he was a father of two, a three-month-old baby and another child currently attending a private school. “Ow yuh worship, ah gah school fees foh pay. Ah gah look after me family plus I ain’t a flight risk and ah gon come back to court,” he pleaded.

Meanwhile, Stewart stated that “de cannabis they find pun me was for my use cause I smoke it for my acute asthma.” He stated that he was the breadwinner for his family.

Both men applied for bail.

The prosecution told the court that the cannabis taken from both men had been in parcels indicating they were meant for trafficking. He applied for early preliminary inquiries to be held for both cases.

The magistrate remanded both men to prison and transferred their cases to Court Five for October 22.
