A nine-year-old boy was yesterday admitted a patient to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) suffering a broken left arm and bruises about his body after being involved in a midday hit-and-run accident at Agricola, East Bank Demerara.

When Stabroek News visited the hospital, Agricola Primary School student Satish Deodat was unable to move and he was crying out for severe pains in his injured hand.

An angry Ralph Legall, a teacher from the school who took the injured boy to the hospital, expressed his disappointment at what he termed “the slow and ridiculous manner in which patients are being treated at the public hospital.”

The concerned teacher explained that they had been at the hospital for in excess of an hour and had not seen a doctor, although the child was in severe pain. “This accident happened at about 12:10 and we got to the hospital around 12:30,” Legall lamented, “now is 1:45. This child crying out in pain and still we haven’t gotten to see a doctor yet.”

The teacher told this newspaper that according to reports reaching him from eyewitnesses, the boy had ventured out of the school yard to purchase lunch. He was on the pedestrian crossing heading in an eastern direction returning to school when he was struck down by a motorcyclist.

The visibly angry Legall related that from what persons on the scene told him, two vehicles had stopped to allow the child across the pedestrian crossing when a motorcycle “came out of nowhere and hit the child.”
