Man fathered child with stepdaughter, 14

A man who fathered a child with his reputed wife’s 14-year-old daughter was charged with two counts of carnal knowledge when he appeared yesterday before Magistrate Chandra Sohan at the New Amsterdam  Court.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charges.

Police said that between December 1 and 12, 2007 and April 1 and  30, this year, the man committed the act at a New Amsterdam community.

Investigators said the defendant had initially denied the allegation when interviewed. However, he later claimed that the virtual complainant had pursued him relentlessly  and one evening after preparing dinner and consuming alcohol, at her insistence he  had sex.

Information revealed that the child’s maternal grandmother took her to the Probation and Welfare Services Department after certain observations were made by neighbours and the defendant had vowed to maintain the child following the delivery.

This newspaper was informed that the virtual complainant is the eldest of nine children, and her mother is currently pregnant with her tenth child, two of whom are fathered by the defendant.

The matter is fixed for report on October 30.
