The National Trust of Guyana opened Heritage Week 2009 with a pictorial exhibition on Monday at the Guyana National Museum.

The exhibition, themed ‘Unlocking Lost Treasures: A Celebration of Our Heritage’ is the eighth since Heritage Week observances began in 2002, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said. The main objective of the exhibition is to inform and enlighten citizens about their heritage and the importance of preserving heritage resources, monuments, sites, objects, structures, landscapes and furniture.

The presentation highlighted the Guyanese identity from past to present. Twelve modules illustrated images on issues ranging from social heritage and recreational lifestyles, to festivals, architectural and industrial elements, the sugar and rum industry, communication, transportation, urban landscapes and heritage erased.

Director of Culture, Dr James Rose officially opened the exhibition. In his remarks he said the fact that Georgetown possesses some of the most important national treasures: the Umana Yana, the 1763 Monument, City Hall, Stabroek Market and St George’s Cathedral and others should greatly impact stakeholder support of their preservation.
