Abdool  Ishack, 39, of 135 Cumberland Village, East  Canje,  who  inflicted several cuffs on his wife because she had  rebuked him for molesting a young woman, was fined $70,000 at the New Amsterdam Court yesterday with an alternative of ten months imprisonment.

The sentence was imposed by newly-appointed Magi-strate Adela Nagamootoo after the defendant pleaded guilty to the charge of assault causing actual  bodily harm to Sanmattie Baichoo.

Ishack, who initially thought he was fined just $7,000,  was shocked and  stood expressionless in the courtroom after the court orderly informed him of the sum.

He then pleaded for forgiveness and expressed regret over the incident and promised that there would not be a recurrence.

Police Lance Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, informed the court that the  incident occurred last Sunday  during a wedding reception at Palmyra Village.

The couple  were guests at the  ceremony  when an argument began  after the husband was seen molesting a young woman.

As a result, he dealt  his wife of twenty years  several  cuffs about her body.

However, on returning home and awakening from bed the following morning, the dispute erupted and again he rained more blows about her body.

A report was made at the Central Police Station and a medical certificate was obtained at the New Amsterdam Hospital, prior to the charges being laid.
