Guysuco quality system given international upgrade

The Guyana Sugar Corpora-tion (Guysuco) says its quality management system was recently upgraded and it is focused on maintaining international standards as it readies itself to produce sugar that will be marketed both locally and internationally.

In a press release the corporation said its quality management system for the production of genuine Demerara cane sugars was upgraded from 9001:2000 to 9001:2008 at the recent surveillance audit by SGS.
Guysuco is the only sugar producer in the Caribbean that is internationally certified, it said.

Guysuco said all its departments operate under the ISO Quality Management System and as a result of the benefits netted from the system, best practices at Blairmont are now being introduced at Enmore where construction is currently underway on a $1.2B Project Gold packaging plant.

Quality Assurance Manager Sharma Dwarka said as Guysuco ventures into more value-added production, greater emphasis will be placed on production quality and consistency. Manage-ment and all employees are fully committed to customer satisfaction as embodied in the Quality Policy of March 11, 2004 and “the Corporation has implemented an internal audit system to ensure continued maintenance and improvement of the system to meet the requirements of standards ahead of international inspection,” he said.

Guysuco said training exercises for personnel from the factory department on the East Coast Demerara are also on stream in order to ensure that they are prepared before completion of the project.

The corporation is targeting production of 125,000 tonnes of value-added sugar annually which will be marketed exclusively in Guyana and at strategic locations worldwide. Guysuco’s overall goal is to produce more than 400,000 tonnes of sugar annually.
