Magistrate Haymant Ramdhani read the charge of murder to the teen on Thursday. He was not required to plead to the capital offence and remains in police custody.

It is alleged that on October 18 at about 6.20pm at the Mahaicony community the 13-year-old murdered Benjamin by stabbing him several times about the body with a kitchen knife. Both boys were residents of Cottage.

Reports are that on the day of the alleged crime Benjamin, the accused and another teen had an argument. The boys, reports said, had splattered Benjamin’s vest with mud and an argument erupted between Benjamin and the other teen who is a friend of the accused.

About an hour after the October 18 argument Benjamin’s mother sent him to a nearby shop. It was while the 15-year-old was on his way to the shop that he was allegedly attacked by the deceased who stabbed him about the body. Benjamin was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahaicony Hospital.

The matter was adjourned to November 9.
