A 27-year-old man, who was shot in the shoulder on Friday night while attacking a policeman with a knife, is a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) under guard.

Police in a press release on Saturday evening said Kevin Maloney of Kitty was shot to the right shoulder at about 11 pm on Friday, while attacking a policeman with a knife at William Street.

Maloney, police said, was noticed by ranks of a mobile patrol that night behaving in a suspicious manner. A search was carried out on his person and a quantity of cannabis discovered. The man, police said, then “made a dash” and was pursued by a policeman.

It was during the chase, the release said, that Maloney pulled a knife from his boot and “menacingly attacked” the officer and was shot as a result. Police did not say whether it was the rank being attacked or another that shot Maloney.
