Social activist Mark Benschop, who was arrested by the police on Thursday evening for disorderly behaviour and obstruction of a search operation which was being conducted by the National Frequency Management Unit (NFMU) at his Roxanne Burnham Gardens home, was yesterday morning released on $25,000 station bail.

Benschop’s attorney Nigel Hughes, told Stabroek News yesterday that his client was released without any charges being instituted against him.

Benschop was taken to the Diamond Police station on Thursday night following an eventful episode outside his Cane View Avenue home during which NFMU officials, led by the department’s head Valmikki Singh, accompanied by a team of police officers swooped on his home in search of transmission equipment which the NFMU stated Benchop was operating illegally from the location.

The NFMU later released a statement which said that the department, following the search, seized a wireless telegraphy apparatus (FM radio transmitter) that was being operated in contravention of the law.
