Human rights must be upheld – PPP

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) yesterday reiterated its “position that it is against torture”.

In a statement issued yesterday on the torture of a 15-year-old while in police custody being questioned in relation to the murder of retired Region Three vice-chairman Ramenaught Bisram last week, the party said it was heartened by the quick action of the Police Force in arresting the alleged perpetrators of this act and hoped justice would be done. “We believe that human rights must be upheld in all circumstances, the rights of prisoners included,” the statement said.

The party said, “conditions in which force was allegedly used against prisoners during interrogation” were often used by lawyers and allowed “many guilty persons, including murderers, to walk free”.

The party also expressed its hope that  Bisram’s murder will be solved.
