Residents of the Onverwagt Compound, West Berbice have lamented the deplorable condition of the streets and drains and are calling for them to be fixed urgently before they get worse.

They told this newspaper that the streets are causing damage to their vehicles and they have to undergo unnecessary expense to fix them. It also takes them a long time to manoeuvre the potholes.

During the rainy season it is even worse and persons who have to traverse the streets by foot said by the time they get to where they are going their footwear and clothing are muddy.

Further, they said the drains are not cleaned and when it rains their yards are flooded.
One housewife said she pays her rates and taxes to the Union/Naarstigheid Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC). However, when she enquired about the cleaning of the streets and drains officials at the NDC told her that it is the duty of the Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary (MMA) office. Her husband checked with MMA and was told that the NDC has to take care of them.

“I want to know who is really responsible because no one seems to be taking an interest,” the woman lamented. “I just want those in authority to do their jobs properly.”
