Lima Dam road to be done in five months

Residents of Lima Dam, Mahaica on the East Coast of Demerara could expect work to be undertaken to the road passing through their community in five months.

According to a release from the Office of the Regional Democratic Council of Region Four (Demerara /Mahaica) work carried out on Lima Dam  is one of several road projects undertaken by the  Ministry of Finance under its ’Roads Maintenance Programme’ within the Region. The release clarified that repair works to the road in question were not part of the Administration Work Programme for 2009.

Regional Executive Officer (REO), Shafdar Alli stated that the works to the Lima Dam project entailed the grading, shaping and compacting to the existing carriageway with an additional 20 cubic yards of 1 square foot grade crusher run.

According to the release, the REO said that while the administration is fully aware of the length of the road, much emphasis was placed on the existing 1970 feet ‘crush and run’ road, since approximately $700,000 was made available by the Ministry of Finance. Alli also said that originally, the Ministry of Finance had submitted to the administration (plans) for the rehabilitation of Hand-en-Veldt Middle Walk and Supply Sideline, roads located in the vicinity of Lima Dam.

The release added that upon investigation by the authorities, it was observed that works on both roads were already done by the Public Works Ministry.

In light of this development the release stated, Lima Dam was the next proposed project to be undertaken by the Unity/Vereeniging National Democratic Council (NDC), a project which was approved by the Ministry of Finance.

According to the release, Diadat Haridat, Overseer attached to the Unity/ Vereeniging NDC, Basic Needs (Trust Fund) has agreed to fund a chip seal road project, following a community meeting recently with residents of Lima Dam.

Residents of Jonestown, Mahaica had complained to this newspaper last week about the quality of work which was undertaken by the Regional Democratic Council of Region Four three weeks ago on Lima Dam, a main road with several arteries within the community and a report was carried in Monday’s Stabroek News. This was preceded by a letter from a resident in the area complaining about the work that had been done.
