First Vice-President of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) Genevieve Allen has been appointed Acting President of the Guyana Teachers Union following the resignation of Colwyn King.

King has been remanded on a charge of having sex with a minor. After being charged with carnal knowledge of a girl under 15 years last week Thursday, King resigned his position. At a Monday meeting, the GTU Executive appointed Allen to the position. General Secretary of the Union, Coretta McDonald pointed out that the GTU’s Constitution provides for such a move.

She said that the resignation of King speaks for itself. At the General Council level, she stated the letter will be taken notice of. “There wouldn’t be any discussion on that at the General Council level”, she, however noted stating that the matter is in court.

On Monday, King was further remanded to prison when he made another appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. His attorney Mark Waldron had applied for bail but this was denied. The prosecution argued that if granted bail, there is a likelihood that the accused would interfere with the witness and tamper with the investigation.
The allegation is that on October 7, King had carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 15.
