Magistrate Ann McLennan on Wednesday sentenced a Wismar man to two years imprisonment for aiding and abetting in the armed robbery of two nurses at the Upper Demerara Hospital.

George Yearwood, 51, of 305 One Mile Wismar, Linden received a two-year sentence on each charge. The sentences will run concurrently.

On September 11, 2008, Yearwood and his co-conspirator, Wesley Payne, armed with a gun, at Blue Berry Hill, Wismar, robbed one nurse of a mobile phone valued $4,000, a gold earring valued $7,200, a gold chain valued $7,000 and a wristwatch valued $5,000. The other nurse was robbed of  a DVD player valued $20,000, a gold earring costing $5,000, a shoulder bag valued $4,000, a mirror valued $1,000, a Nokia cellular phone valued $5,000 and $530 cash.

Payne had pleaded guilty to the charges and was previously sentenced to three years imprisonment on each charge. However, Yearwood had pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison.

In his defence, Yearwood told the Christianburg Magistrates’ Court that he had gotten the items from a man who had attempted to sell them to him. He said he did not have the cash for them and instead he had assisted in securing markets for the items. Shortly after, he was arrested. The persons who the items were sold to testified under oath that they purchased them from Yearwood.
