Sixteen prisoners, who appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday to be further remanded, behaved in a disorderly manner using obscene language and throwing food and drink on the floor.

The incident, according to a police press release issued last evening, occurred in Court One around 1.35 pm when the prisoners were taken before Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

While in the courtroom, police reported, the prisoners began to behave in a disorderly manner and abused the magistrate and police in the court, using obscene language, and insisting that they be taken to court at Bartica.  One prisoner had a bottle of drink which he had concealed and another had a container with food which they threw about the floor of the courtroom.

Despite being warned about their behaviour by the police they continued and the magistrate was forced to adjourn court. They were subdued by the police and were subsequently further remanded by another magistrate after which they were returned to the Georgetown Prison.
The prisoners will be charged accordingly and taken to court shortly.
