Jamaica gets US$16M loan from World Bank for education reforms

The World Bank has approved a US$16M loan for Jamaica to support reforms to the national education system through capacity-building.

In a press release Minister of Education Andrew Holness, MP said the project supports Jamaica’s efforts to deliver more effective and efficient education services by assisting with the establishment of independent agencies that are accountable for results.

The Education Transformation Capacity Building Project will support implementation of the national Education System Transformation Programme by making operational the emerging key agencies that will ensure the delivery of high quality education and boost the efficiency, accountability and performance of the education system. The new agencies include the National Education Inspectorate, the Jamaica Teaching Council the Regional Education Authorities and the National Education Trust.

“Building staff capacity and helping institutional structures and systems to become fully functioning and efficient entities is at the core of the new programme,” Yvonne Tsikata, World Bank Director for the Caribbean said.
