Kumar Sawh of La Grange, West Bank Demerara, who allegedly chopped his reputed wife with a cutlass, was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Sawh pleaded not guilty to an unlawful wounding charge when Magistrate Priya Beharry read it to him. He denied that on November 21, at their La Grange home, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Radika Shivraj.

Prosecutor Krishnadat Ramana stated that Sawh is always in the habit of physically abusing his wife. He said that on the day in question Sawh had consumed a quantity of alcohol and after he went home he got into an argument with Shivraj. During this argument, Sawh picked up a cutlass and dealt Shivraj a chop to her left foot.

He said the couple’s son saw what was happening and he ran to the police station and reported the matter.

The police went to the couple’s home, arrested Sawh and took Shivraj to the hospital. Shivraj, who was also present in court, stated that she will be offering evidence against Sawh in the matter.

The prosecutor objected to Sawh’s bail application, arguing that if released he posed a danger to Shivraj.
The magistrate ordered that the matter be transferred to the Wales Magistrate’s Court for December 3.
