National disability group hosts symposium for students today

In a press release the Guyana Council of Organisations For Persons with Disabilities said that this year observances are being held under the theme ‘Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and their Communities around Guyana.’ The council is collaborating with the National Commission on Disability and VSO Guyana to host the School Symposium and Awards Ceremony for winners of the National Slogan-making Contest.

The seminar will be divided into three categories for primary, secondary and special needs schools. A representative from the secondary school will be expected to give a ten-minute presentation on a topic related to this year’s theme. At the primary level a representative will be required to make a five-minute presentation while the special needs student will not be subject to a time limit.

According to the release, this year’s observances are being held within the context of government’s legislative support as represented by the introduction of the People With Disabilities Bill 2006, in the National Assembly.

On Thursday, December 3 Guyana joins the rest of the world in observing International Day for Persons with Disability thereby recognising the achievements and contributions from the said group. Observances aim at promoting an understanding of disability issues and mobilizing support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. “It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of life,” the release said.
