When this newspaper visited the public hospital yesterday, Sewsankar Raymond’s relatives were expressing hope that the man would recover from injuries he sustained in the accident, which included a fractured skull. His wife told this newspaper that her husband was also bleeding through his ears yesterday. She said the man was not responding when she and other relatives tried to speak to him. Raymond had sustained head injuries in an accident involving a truck several years ago, another relative recounted yesterday.

The man’s son told this newspaper that his father left their Lot 29, Le Ressouvenir, ECD home on his bicycle around 5:30 on Saturday afternoon for his place of work at Happy Acres farther up the ECD public road when he was struck down by a motor car. He said his father was riding along the left side of the road when the car struck him from behind and the driver, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time, attempted to drive away from the scene. Another motorist driving a truck picked up the injured man and followed the car, stopping in front of the vehicle farther up the East Coast public road, following which the matter was reported to the police.

The driver and the car were taken to the Sparendaam Police Station where the man remains in police custody. His relatives were also at the hospital yesterday lending support to the injured man’s relatives.
