Woman charged with ill-treating child

At the Blairmont Court on Monday, Magistrate Nigel Hawke sent a Shieldstown, West Bank Berbice woman on her own bail when she appeared before him to answer charges of ill-treatment of a child.

The court heard that on November 24 at Shieldstown, Dilwattie Roopnarine reportedly ill-treated an eight-year-old child. The woman who was represented by attorney-at-law Kumar Doraisami pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Police prosecutor, Inspec-tor Donna Grant-Fraser did not object to bail.

The woman is scheduled to return to court on December 14 for report.

Roopnarine was arrested on Wednesday last following reports that she was abusing her eight-year-old nephew while he was in her care.

The boy, who was at times reportedly chained and locked away, was rescued after his plight was highlighted last Wednesday during a seminar held for International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women at the Fort Wellington Boardroom.

The Probation Department was contacted and officers subsequently informed police, who reportedly found marks of violence on the child’s body.

The boy was removed from the home and is staying with an uncle.
