An ex-police officer was denied bail when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to answer to the charge of attempted rape and indecent assault yesterday.

Lennox King, 36, of Lamaha Park, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to attempted rape. It is alleged that on November 22 in Georgetown King attempted to rape a woman.

It is also alleged that on November 6 in Georgetown King indecently assaulted the same woman. King pleaded not guilty to this charge as well.

In his bail attempt for his client, Attorney-at-law Patrice Henry told the court this his client had served in the Guyana Police Force as a Lance Corporal, serial number 17452, for 13 years until last Friday when he was summarily dismissed. King who is 36 years old, Henry said, is in a common-law relationship and has two children who are minors.

Henry told the court that his client’s dismissal has compromised his ability to defend himself.

He further said that his client was placed on station bail and was asked to appear at the station yesterday morning and did so. There is no reason why he would not attend court, Henry said in his bail application. He asked for reasonable bail.

Meanwhile Prosecutor in the case, Inspector Stephen Telford objected to bail. Telford said that while he agrees that King was a policeman until last Friday, he is facing two charges.

He said that the attempted rape occurred at the Police Communications Office while the assault had occurred at a building on Church Street.

Telford stated that King and the woman were friends but King took things for granted because of that friendship.

King’s matter was transferred to Court Six for statements today.
