Constable in Schoonord accident still hospitalized

The 22-year-old police constable who was involved in an accident on the Schoonord Public Road opposite the Demerara  Harbour  Bridge (DHB) on December  2 in which  two cars where badly damaged, remains a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

According to a police source, the policeman is nursing a dislocated hip while both of his legs are reported to be broken. It is unclear whether any charges will be brought against the police officer or the other driver who was involved in the accident.

Based on an eyewitness account, the police rank was driving Toyota motor car, PLL 2330 south  along the public road in the direction of Wales  when he lost control of the vehicle and  collided with a Nissan car, PJJ 6103 which was waiting at the DHB junction to turn left after crossing the bridge minutes earlier. There were no other passengers in the two vehicles at the time of the accident.

The accident occurred around 8 pm and the driver of the Nissan escaped with minor injuries after the airbag in his vehicle inflated on impact. Following the collision, the driver of the Toyota was trapped for more than half of an hour before he was extracted from the vehicle by members of the Guyana Fire Service  crying out in pain, an eyewitness related that evening.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
