The Office of the President (OP) is mourning the passing of Brindley Benn and recalled his dedicated service to the nation.

According to a press release, President Bharrat Jagdeo conveyed his condolences to the Benn family and considers his death a great loss to the nation. Benn’s service to the nation “forms part of a rich and impressive history of political struggle and national liberation,” OP said, adding that “He worked tirelessly for the welfare of the country and nation with wisdom and merit.”

Benn served as Deputy Premier of Guyana and as Minister of Community Development and Education in 1957. He also served as agriculture minister in 1961. In 1992 he was appointed High Commissioner to Canada, a position he held from 1993 to 1998. On his return to Guyana he served as chairman of the Public Service Commission for three years.

He was also a member of the Teaching Service Commission and the Police Service Commission and served as chairman of the Guyana Lotteries Commission and also on the Appeals Board of the Guyana Revenue Authority.
