Warrant issued over death of Canal girl

Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin yesterday issued an arrest warrant for a man charged with causing the death of a girl at Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara, after he did not turn up in court.

Mohamed Zamrudeen of Lot 7 Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara was charged with causing death by dangerous driving. It is alleged that on November 30 at the Canal Number One Public Road, he drove motor vehicle PLL 5444 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Jasmine Hardin.

However, when the matter was called at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday, the accused was not present.

The court was told that checks were made at Zamrudeen’s home but he was not found.

The accused was on station bail following the incident pending the outcome of investigations and was supposed to report to the La Grange Police station every Monday, the court was told.

The magistrate issued the arrest warrant and adjourned the matter for March 1 next year at the Wales Magistrate’s Court.
