Miner stabbed in chest, wife in custody

A 26-year-old miner was up to press time in serious condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after being stabbed in the chest reportedly by his reputed wife.

The injured man is Gregory King, who sustained stab wounds to the left side of his chest in the vicinity of his heart.  He was transferred from the Bartica Hospital to the GPH last evening.

Sister of the injured man Carol King told this newspaper that the circumstances under which her brother was stabbed remained sketchy. However, she said his reputed wife was taken into custody after she confessed to stabbing him. King, a Bartica resident, said that the incident occurred at Itaballi where the man lived with the woman. According to her, the two of them run a business there together.

The man’s sister said she received a telephone call saying that her brother had been hospitalized at the Bartica Hospital. She said her brother’s reputed wife had initially told the police that the man was injured during a robbery attempt at their shop. However, the woman was taken into custody after she retracted this story and later confessed that she was the one who had inflicted the wounds.

According to the sister, her brother was in serious condition and was not speaking. She said that while travelling to Georgetown, he spoke once and that was to ask for a drink of water.

Police are investigating.
