GPL, NAACIE wage talks hit snag

Wage negotiations between the union, NAACIE and the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) broke down temporarily yesterday, when the union found some of the company’s proposals to be unacceptable.

However, the talks between the too entities are scheduled to resume this morning, General Secretary  of the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) Kenneth Joseph said yesterday.

According to Joseph, the meeting held yesterday “was not so successful” since there was a breakdown in the talks because GPL wanted the union to agree to certain conditions which NAACIE does not find favourable.

He, however, declined to identify what these conditions were.

Joseph said that the power company has so far presented two offers to the union. The first offer is to grant the workers a 6 percent increase across the board.

The second offer, Joseph disclosed, is for a 4.5 percent increase across the board along with increases in medical benefits as well as some other  allowances.
