I would like to thank all my teachers, neighbours and parents who flogged me for whatever reason, including no reason at all, because the fear engendered made me a much more disciplined and law-abiding adult. My poor academic performance was directly related to my shirking of my studies and being disruptive in class while the subject was being taught. I know all about the reasons for my disruptive behaviour such as the teacher's inability to present lessons interesting enough to hold my attention. Bovine scatology. I was a truant and should have been expelled. Once more I thank all those responsible for rescuing my neck from a noose or some other terminal method of disposal.

I did end up with a degree in electrical engineering and held management positions in Telecommunications and Broadcasting in Canada. Looking back it's humbling when I think of the distance traveled and the insurmountable obstacles obliterated.

I also think you attach too much importance to the institution of marriage. What is important is the presence of a male figure who shows interest in the development of the children. My son has four children with the same lady and they have been together for fourteen years. They live together and he is very involved as a father in a marriage. "Why buy the cow if you are already getting the milk for free. Don't change the course of the ship if the sailing is smooth and steady."

Many moons ago I think I worked with your uncle at Agricola Anglican. Around 1964. Left the country soon after that and still miss it to this day.

I am posting on June 7,2009 when the headline is "chain snatcher shot". This young man was shot by a "public spirited citizen" in the back as he ran away. Somehow this highlights the thrust of your article on the new coarseness in the character of the Guyanese citizen. This propensity to use violence against each other is spreading and I fear will lead to our "big bang moment". There is a sense of hopelessness in one segment of the population and like a cat with his back against the wall, with no more room for retreat, that cat will go into attack mode. Guyana is approaching that state and I fear for my country.
