Trouble at the Top

Evidence of a crisis at the level of the leadership of the People’s National Congress/Reform (PNC/R, the main political opposition to the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has given rise to healthy speculation among political watchers about the future of the party and a fair measure of disquiet among party members.

Much of the apparent instability centres around the issue of the party’s leadership. The recent public falling out between party leader Robert Corbin and long-standing stalwarts, Vincent Alexander and James Mc Allister and the more recent resignation of another key member of the party’s leadership, Winston Murray, as chairman, have raised questions both about Corbin’s leadership and about the longer-term political fate of the the PNC/R.

Concern over the current goings on at Sophia go beyond what appears to be  personality issues. Any major crisis in the PNC/R is bound to have a knock-on effect on the  very engine room of local politics given the size and significance of its support base.
In this issue the Guyana Review examines the institution of the PNC/R; the question of leadership  and the party’s future as a political force in Guyana

  1. LE VE GT UNITED STATES says:

Desmond Hoyte was the only good leader of the PNC but never got a chance to prove it. Guyana and it’s “free and fair elections” got them in the mess they’re in right now.

  2. A. Persaud UNITED STATES says:

Not fair elections got them into that “mess”. It is the party illegal acts and condoning of crimes by a few that has the PNC in trouble today. There is no one in the party with a vision to denounce crime, violence and to represent all the races. The PNC actions of the past has almost buried that party! It is time for a new leader with a new vision and with new policies that will revitalize that party!

“United we stand , divided we fall” . A word to the wise is enough .

  4. ERWIN CANADA says:

We need someone with common sense, not greed of power to be the next PNC leader. One that strive for all Guyanese to be one, regardless of RACE,COLOUR. or CREED.

    In Unity their is strenght.

  6. GREG UNITED STATES says:

It is saddening to see the state of affairs in the PNC/R.
I’m remindided of the struggles and sacrifices guyanese has made to put Guyana on the road to independence and unto become the Republic of Guyana.
The party that L.F.S.Burnham built was one that was inclusive of all people, and he provided the kind of leadership that commanded the respect of guyanese of all walks of life.
Maybe new leadership is what is required in the PNC/R.
iT IS BREAKING apart the seam and the leaders does’nt seem to notice.
The party needs to come together and put their differences aside and put the interest of the Guyanese people first.
you cannot divorce yourselves from the principles of the party and expect the party to remain vibrant.

  7. lilly_wntrs UNITED STATES says:

Corbin is not a leader , So y have him there , He is more like trouble , compare to the other PNC stalwart’s

So let him just resign as the leader and give the range to other that can effect some change in the party

Come on Korbin , I know u r watching the monthly salary , Give that up and let another comrade takes over , Maybe he would share that monetry side with u

  8. brainchild CANADA says:

i don’t see the PNC winning an election in the near future with what is happening in the “circle on love”

  9. seve UNITED KINGDOM says:

    Fair and free!
After twenty eight years Desond Hoyte appeared to be a good leader and may have given the party a chance. Then there was Hammy say no more, the marridge did not work. PNC/R is that reform…….OR RUBBISH! it appears they are going full circle look at GT, a former PM of the PNC can’t even deal with the rubbish in it.
Once again we have to learn to live with it. PNC/R empty your bin get ride of the chips and show you are the party for all gyanese {PNC/FAG}…FAG for all Guyanese.lol

  10. Doug Sims UNITED STATES says:

I feel that the time has come for Mr. Robert Corbin to give up gracefully the leadership of the PNC. He has served his purpose in times past, but we need a new BRIGHT star to shine. The world was captivated by the brilliance and eloquence of a YOUNG congressman who transformed the electorial process in the USA, energised whole segemnts of the population who never had any interest in participating in the electorial process. We all know that today he the President of the United States. Where is our star, incorruptable and untainted by the politics of old, who has new ideas and a vision for the future development of our dearly beloved country, GUYANA.
