Nothing to worry about

Dear Editor,
I would like to express my profound gratitude to the Minister of Finance for the substantial increase of $300 on the Old Age Pension.

This amount will now make it possible for me to purchase a small pawpaw, four fig bananas and perhaps two mints to improve my well-being.

Such generosity assures me that, despite the difficult times which face Guyana in the immediate future, we old folk have nothing to worry about.
Yours faithfully,
Carl Rogers
Chief Fire Officer (retd)

Oh my God, this is ridiculous, even though the letter is funny to hell, this is still ridiculous.

I can also buy a pair of rubber slippers for throwing at officialdom.

    ha ha….

    Is that sarcasm or what?

  5. B. Thomas UNITED STATES says:

This finance minister is the biggest disappointment. I had high hopes for him. 1. he is a brillant man 2. he is young and 3. was not (I think) a PPP. Now he is being used like all the rest.

  6. Andy UNITED STATES says:

A brief but light-hearted letter on a very serious matter. Unfortunately, the humor quickly dissipates as we quickly realize that an increase of $300GY a month in the pension payments equates to $1.50US a month.

Do you see why foreign remittances are so vital to keeping Guyanese from going beserk and throwing more than hust shoes at officialdom?

And do you now understand the grand dissing of old age pensioners, who alread paid their dues helping keep Guyana afloat, to be told they’re getting $300GY a month extra, when more should be forthcoming; yet the government could have arbitrarily dipped into the NIS and taken over a billion dollars to help build the Berbice Bridge?

Why are our pensioners being forced to pay twice?

  7. quibian CANADA says:

you lucky you get that. let me see if i can remember when the canadian or the us govts. increase old pension…….hmmmmm. i can’t.

    • Ulric UNITED STATES says:

Quibian, a little info fuh you. The US Government increased social security payments by 8% as of Jan 1st 2009. Petition the Canadian Government to do the same. ISNM

quibian did u check out kaiman bill board lately? the kid is a riot down there, hes gotten worse.

  8. Greg UNITED STATES says:

An extremely witty comment on a very sad situation. This kind of attitude helps one to live longer and not go into tantrums of shoe pelting. I hope the mild sarcasm brings out the best from the ministers and government on this matter.

    • Ulric UNITED STATES says:

Very sad indeed Greg. “Rock (minister with responsibility for managing old age pension) deh a riva bottom he nah know how hot sun a shine ah top”. Mr. Rogers did extremely well in couching his displeasure with the “small piece” in a letter all of Guyana understand. ISNM

  9. caesar agustus UNITED STATES says:

Od age pensioners should be given special cards to travel free on public transportation, food stamps, and areas that cater a hot meal.

    • nickey GUYANA says:

Ceasar have u been out of Guyana so long that u have lost touch with reality. Do u realy think a pensioner could show a minibus conductor who could hardly read a card and not pay? We dont have any food stamps system here or hot meals.

    • octo UNITED STATES says:

i dont that guyana have the food stamp system, or soup kitckens . but u r rite they should be allowed to travel free on public transport if they have them.
