Dear Editor,

Is it true that land behind the Caricom Secretariat has been sold to Giftland Office Max? If so was there a public tender? If my information is correct, is the construction of a mall at that site the best utilisation of the said property?

Should we not have saved it for possible extension of the University of Guyana, or for that matter could we not have placed the law school there?

Could the President and/or the PPP say why we are not going ahead with the establishment of the law school? Could the Chairman of the Bar Association say if they stand opposed to the establishment of a law school in Guyana. Are they afraid of competition? Maybe executive member of the PPP and a senior counsel, Mr Ralph Ramkarran, could influence the party to move towards the establishment of a law school.

As it is only rich kids could afford to study at the law school. I feel that such a school would be good for Guyana. Has the government given up the idea?

Yours faithfully,
Rajendra Bissessar

Please there are too many lawyers. The law is what rich kids do when they dont know what they want to be. many of them dont love it or appreciate it.

I thought the same too. I think the location is a bit odd and inappropriate. just think of the confusion with the traffic, especially taxis and delivery trucks. since Caricom ’s two offices and the conference center are there, it would be wise to reserve those lands for other similar offices, public buildings or the expansion of UG like the writer said. a mall there will take away the peace, quiet and security from the area. and image to get to the mall, u have to pass between the caricom and the conference center. a better option (not the best) is the area west of the conference center, or west on the opposite side closer to the Turkeyen canal or along the Rupert Craig highway between UG and the Turkeyen canal. the same applies for the proposed swimming pool in the said area. imagine a swimming pool in the middle of nowhere. the pool should be incorporated into the national stadium. there is enough land there, or they can utilize the land between home stretch and hadfield street near the Cliff Anderson sports hall.

Rajendra Bissessar..is time that we move out of the city.

G/T is too crowded and is time that both government and
business move away and spread more inland.

We do not need more lawyer.

We need engineers, scientists, medical doctors, agriculturists,
technicians etc…definitely not more lawyers. Plus the Gov’t
should move the capital more inland by starting to set up
offices and residences and inviting businesses to join them.

    • A. Persaud UNITED STATES says:

I agree it is time government start building cities more inland,as the city is already overcrowded! Law school and any other educational institution should also be moved further inland. Guyana would turn out to be marvelous place as the people moved more inland and start developing our mass land spaces.

The Linden Soesdyke area begs for development.

  4. Greg UNITED STATES says:

I a general sence I agree with the writer here. Zoning is very important. What is frustrating is that our leaders are hap hazard and visionless. All land directly behind the Caricom Secretariat up to UG, with access from UG road, should be for schools, Government departments or office buildings.

Adding on the sentiment that we need to spread out from the city. It is not bad to have a mall bordering this area but the access road should not be from UG road. A road west of the Secretariat or one through Campbellville should be established for access to the mall, thus taking away heavy traffic from the area of the secretariat.

  5. Diamond Dog UNITED STATES says:

Another mall? Wey Guyanese get all da money fo spend in all dem malls. Why not a manufacturing or processing plant. Share foolishness taking place in GT. Bird pepper growing all over the place. Bottle some for export like the Haitians. Mall mall mall.Stuuuuupt. (suck teeth).

  6. caesar agustus UNITED STATES says:

No, the CARICOM secretariat site is the best utilization for a mall.
