Dear Editor,

I am writing to draw attention to the disgraceful mess which is being made at the corner of Crown and Oronoque Streets in Queenstown by a building contractor. (Photograph provided) The site is a private lot which is under construction with a new building going up.

The following unsafe conditions exist:

There is a huge pile of sand which partially blocks Crown Street and nearly caused an accident today, April 11; sand is scattered across the road at the junction of Crown and Oronoque Streets, causing a skid hazard; and sand is being dumped into the drain or trench, which is preventing the neighbourhood from being drained properly when it rains.

The pavement is totally blocked on the Crown Street side of the property by old wood and junk, forcing pedestrians to walk into the road. The area is unsightly, untidy and totally out of keeping with a residential area.

Just how can this happen?  Why is the city council allowing this?  Why are the police allowing the road and pavement to be blocked in this manner? Surely this is against the laws of Guyana?
