Dear Editor,

What a display by members of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) at the just concluded election for leadership of the Georgetown District. What a public embarrassment to the party. At a time when Guyanese are searching for an alternative to the blatant mismanagement and marginalization that disregards the hard-working citizens of this country, we see this chaotic disorganized upheaval of people squabbling over who should lead the Georgetown District.

If in fact the electoral process was flawed then the results should be made null and void, but if it was done transparently then the results should be upheld.  There seems to be a lot of questions to answer as to why a simple activity that involves persons uplifting ballot papers and ticking who they want to be their district leader and placing them in a ballot box, became marred by confusion. Wasn’t there an established process map for this event? Come on, this is a serious indictment of the administrators of the PNCR.

What does the PNCR think outsiders are thinking right now when they see that degree of lawlessness and poor administration of a simple process? Do they think they will attract new voters this way? Are they planning to retain the members of their constituencies with this kind of breakdown in respect and alleged dishonesty? Mr Murray in his pep talk before the madness began was right. The PNCR is the “eyepass” of the government. Actually they’ve become an eyesore in the political tapestry in Guyana.

Imagine the leader of the PNCR can’t even control his own flock. If a simple activity like electing a district chairman has so much controversy how can the PNCR really believe it would be an attraction for young voters and the undecided? How can the party that was once the ruling party be reduced to this discontented, disillusioned group? It’s the leadership that is the problem. Mr Burnham and Mr Hoyte must be turning in their graves when they see the rapid destruction of a force that was once truly the People’s National Congress. Mr Corbin must take the splinter out of his own eye before he calls on others to remove the plank that is in theirs. Some people are indeed good followers. If only they would recognize that and act accordingly.

I have penned it before in the columns of this newspaper that the PNCR should really try and correct its image very soon if it intends to become an electable force with which to be reckoned. The year 2011 is right around the corner!

Yours faithfully,
Richard Francois

  1. Andy UNITED STATES says:

By its very attitude the PNC under Robert Corbin is aiding and abetting the President in his government’s shenanigans. There is no real opposition, only pretend resistance, and the country continues to suffer because of the PNC being in bed with the President. Guyana is really a hopeless basket case unless the people rally around a party that is neither PPP nor PNC and a leader that is not from the PPP or PNC today.

  2. Paul Rodman GUYANA says:

Well said. You touched on the point in your last paragraph and this is what i have always been arguing for. People must look at the bigger picture, rather than their own myopic views. The PNC leadership isn’t serious about competing in the next general elections come 2011

  3. BORAPORK CANADA says:

Mr.Corbin is an abject failure as a political leader and the sooner he and his political party are part of history the better it would be for Guyana. These people can’t organize a one car funeral and last Sunday’s display of chaos and confusion did not augur well as a display of competent governance. A leader who has to use his medical condition as a tool to maintain discipline and order was one of the saddest spectacles ever. Has this man ever had a job outside of government and opposition? Now it appears there are three cliques in the P.N.C., the Alexander clique, the Norton clique and the Corbin clique. It could have been four but Trotman left the sinking ship.

    • Georgie UNITED STATES says:

Borapork ! The election at the last PPP congress revealed a similar dissatisfaction by some members of the executive committee. But , that dissatisfaction stopped indoors. What you have here, are a bunch of undereducated, unintelligent jokers, who believe that they can be national leaders. Their professionalism is running to the press… Please, help me ! help me ! What a loser. Do you think any organization will welcome him with open arms ? Get outta here !

    • Ulric UNITED STATES says:

You bloggers and especially BORAPORK must all be listening to the “noise of the tassa”. I know most of you try to be critical thinkers, but your every thought is influenced by the “noise of the tassa”. Borapork, lets examine your attempt to be critical of the PNC and its leader Mr. Corbin. In your feeble and inept attempt to characterise my Mr. Corbin as a failure you cited his illness. How sad. Has this man ever had a job outside of government and opposition?(sic) What is wrong with a person dedicating his life to serving? Clique? This statement shows your limited understanding of organizations. A walk to your nearest library and cursory reading on the development and functions of political organizations may do you some good. This will assist you in elimating the “noise of the tassa”. ISNM

    • BORAPORK CANADA says:

Ulric: Maybe you should read the original article in SN. It’s Mr. Corbin who mentioned his illness in trying to calm the confusion.
We can make a determination on the conscientiousness of his serving if you had mentioned what he had forsaken to pursue his quest for power.
My condemnation of the P.N.C. and its leaders does not mean that I am enamoured with the P.P.P. I have been calling for change away from the two main parties because of their sick racist appeal to the two major ethnic groups in the country. There is no need to hide behind the racist euphemism of “tassa drums” to bolster your argument.
I still await an answer to my question on Corbin’s employment history but I think I already know the answer. It’s sad but there are still Kool Aid drinkers in our midst. Have a gulp Ulric.

Only the opposition especially the PNC is becoming more comical each day and not Guyana.

  7. Veronica SPAIN says:

Well, well, well, what a sad state of affairs, which by the way pleases me immensely however on the other hand confirms an extremely pathetic political system in Guyana. My God a simple act of uplifting the ballot paper, ticking your favorite candidate and depositing the ballot paper in the ballot box is deemed confusing (leaves a complete idiot grasping for words) to make matters worst no one knows what a flawed electoral process implies.

PNCR obviously lacks organizational skills, its ignorance of due process is staggering coupled with an above average amount of infighting is altogether not representative for the party. They accuse the present regime of much but their own behavioural pattern is not even a hairs breadth better.

Conclusion: PNCR in its present form is not equip to run for office.
Advise: Forget 2011 election, concentrate on educating your members especially in the fields of political science and administration.

  8. RDMAN UNITED STATES says:

Mr.Corbin needs to get out of the way and allow a free and fair process in the party.Van West would have a hard time here,it doesn’t seems Corbin would easily quit without a fight,at a closed door meeting here in” Little Guyana” a PPP minister said his government rather work with Corbin than Van West Charles.Corbin is more malleable, that’s why when he was sick the government paid his medical expenses.

    • MR WEST BANK UNITED STATES says:

I agree with you RDMAN. Mr Corbin will never quit the party unless he dead. I think that he is only there because of the increase benefits and the money that he
is receving each month and to hell with the poor tax
payers in the country and the party supporters
      FULL STOP.

  9. geeteerebel UNITED STATES says:

The year is 2011, as the country bids farewell to President Jagedo the new President is set to be sworn in. He’s confident, sharp and arrogant, and why not, with his party now controlling 75% of parliament who can stop him?

    Fine print:
After 3:1 trashing in the recent elections Mr. Corbin is determined to remain leader of the PNC-r and insist that only the grim-reaper can remove him from this post.

What a legacy he will leave behind for the children eh….

I really do not know why he has not retired as yet. Hopefully soon. PNC/R and Corbin are very much over unfortunately they do not know it.

    • Ultimate W CANADA says:

No , Cobin really believe that he get a second chance at life after the whole chest pain story , he really belive that the second chance is the sign that he will win the election and be the next President . So he’s well motivated . … Hope the pncr supporters are motivated too after his recent actions with his own party people.
